Tata Capital Limited, the flagship financial services company of the Tata Group, is a subsidiary of Tata Sons Private Limited, the holding company of the Tata Group. With a legacy spanning over 150 years, the Tata Group is one of India’s most distinguished business conglomerates, encompassing sectors like automotive, technology, steel, financial services, aerospace, and consumer goods. According to the CRISIL Report, Tata Capital is one of the largest and fastest-growing diversified Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) in India.
Lending Business Verticals
Tata Capital’s Lending Business is divided into three primary verticals:
1. Retail Finance: Offers loans like home loans, personal loans, business loans, car loans, two-wheeler loans, education loans, and microfinance to salaried and self-employed individuals and small business owners. As of June 30, 2025, Retail Finance contributed 61.3% to the company’s Total Gross Loans.
2. SME Finance: Provides solutions such as supply chain finance, equipment finance, and leasing to SMEs, as well as term loans and cleantech finance. SME Finance accounted for 26.2% of Total Gross Loans as of June 30, 2025.
3. Corporate Finance: Focuses on larger businesses with turnovers exceeding ₹2.5 billion, offering term loans, infrastructure finance, and developer finance. Corporate Finance made up 12.5% of Total Gross Loans as of June 30, 2025.
Non-Lending Businesses
Apart from its lending business, Tata Capital operates non-lending businesses, which include:
1. Distribution of third-party products like insurance and credit cards.
2. Wealth management services for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs).
3. Private equity (PE) business, focusing on Growth (urbanization, manufacturing, strategic services) and Healthcare (pharmaceuticals, hospitals, diagnostic services, etc.).
Customer Base and Product Portfolio
Since commencing its lending operations in 2007, Tata Capital has served 7.3 million customers. The company offers a diverse range of 25+ lending products, catering to salaried and self-employed individuals, small businesses, SMEs, and corporates. Retail and SME customers represent 87.5% of Tata Capital’s Total Gross Loans as of June 30, 2025.
The loan portfolio is highly granular, with loan amounts ranging from ₹10,000 to over ₹1 billion, and 98% of loans have a ticket size of less than ₹10 million. Additionally, 80% of the total loans are secured, and the Organic Book accounts for over 99% of total gross loans.
Distribution and Digital Presence
Tata Capital employs an omni-channel distribution model, combining an extensive branch network with a strong digital presence. As of June 30, 2025, the company has 1,516 branches across 27 States and Union Territories in India, complemented by proprietary digital platforms like its website and mobile apps. This “phygital” strategy allows Tata Capital to efficiently serve its customers through both physical and digital channels.
Tata Capital boasts a well-diversified liability base, supported by a AAA credit rating from major agencies like CRISIL, ICRA, CARE, and India Ratings.
